How to Get Narcan in NYC
Naloxone (Narcan) is the overdose-reversing medication every New Yorker should have on hand. Here's how to get it.
Where to Get Narcan for Free
In New York State, Narcan nasal spray is available without a prescription. You can get it for free through the NYC Department of Health, at many community pharmacies (including Duane Reade and Walgreens), and through local harm reduction programs.
The NYC Health Department's Opioid Overdose Prevention Program distributes free Narcan kits at training sessions and drop-in centers across the city.
How to Use Narcan
Narcan nasal spray is designed to be used by non-medical people. Spray once in one nostril. If there's no response within 2–3 minutes, give a second dose in the other nostril. Call 911. Perform rescue breathing until help arrives. New York's Good Samaritan law protects people who call 911 during an overdose.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Narcan be dangerous to give?
No. Narcan has no effect on a person who doesn't have opioids in their system. Giving it during a suspected overdose is always the right call.
Does Narcan work for xylazine?
Narcan only works on opioid overdoses. But because fentanyl is almost always present alongside xylazine, giving Narcan is still the right first step.
